Let’s be honest: Patients can be frustrating for doctors. Whether they were dragged into the office by a loved one or they’re hesitant to take advice, the relationship between patient and doctor can be tricky. Knowing how to ask the right questions and ease their concerns can make all the difference. The only question is, how do you do it?

For Dr. Jeffrey Shannon making his patients comfortable and meeting their needs is his top priority. As an audiologist with more than ten years of direct experience, he has discovered how to simplify that process. He is eager to share his knowledge through his podcast and role as a professional advisor — and now he extends it to the ListenUp! podcast.

On this episode of ListenUp!, Dr. Mark Syms interviews Dr. Jeffrey Shannon, the Owner and Director of the Hudson Valley Audiology Center, to hear his strategy for working with his patients. They break down how to get patients comfortable, how to gauge their attitude when they arrive, and how well they can identify their own hearing loss. Stay tuned for all of this and more!

Dr. Jeffrey Shannon  2:02

Thanks for having me, Mark.

Dr. Mark Syms  2:03

Oh, sure. It’s great. Yeah. You know, one of the things I always love to get from people is like, so how did you end up in audiology? Like, you know, what was your path? I mean, you obviously have the credentials and stuff. But like, what was that aha moment? Or this is where I’m going moment for you?

Dr. Jeffrey Shannon  2:17

Yeah, sure. So starting in electrical engineering at the University of Dayton, in Ohio, I worked in IT for a couple of years. And I was just looking for something a little more direct to, you know, making an impact on people’s lives. I was always say I was a doctor of computers. So actually, after that, I actually became a high school math and science teacher, because if you’re not going to impact people’s lives, I don’t know how else than doing that. My mother was a teacher for 34 years. So I think there was some some influence there. But then what happened is I met my girlfriend who was studying to become a speech language pathologist, she needed help in a class called introduction to audiology. Never heard of audiology. I started learning more about it. I was became very interested because of the physics and the acoustics and the technology, and the fact that you’re using this technology to essentially help people. And I started to really dive into that, um, long story short, we both ended up going to graduate school at the University of Louisville and Kentucky. She Erin is now a speech language pathologist and I’m an audiologist. So I always say I can’t I didn’t know how to thank her enough. So I proposed to her. And, and that was my thank you. So now we have three kids, and live here in New York, and we have, you know, this practice and–

Dr. Mark Syms  3:43

So your love took you to your love of audio?

Dr. Jeffrey Shannon  3:47

That’s right. That’s awesome. I’ll start using that.

Dr. Mark Syms  3:50

That’s a great story, right? And it’s always amazing how people end up they kind of stumbled into it. And it sounds like it’s a mesh of technical teaching and care. And it’s all those things. And that’s one of the things I think audiology is a great profession. So and you know, you and I both mine’s ListenUp!, yours is Listen Up Rockland! It’s amazing, you know, the proverbial, you know, like minds. Why did you start that show?
