As was discussed during a pre-operative appointment, the extent of the disease in your ear may necessitate a second surgery. You will need a second procedure.

During the procedure, the extent of the disease in your ear resulted in the placement of a sheet of plastic in the ear. The sheet is placed between the bottom of your ear and the ear drum. The plastic prevents scarring and maintains a middle ear space. A middle ear space is needed for the ear drum to vibrate and transmit sound. When your ear disease results in the decision during surgery to place the plastic sheet, it necessitates what is called a “second stage surgery.”

The second stage surgery occurs between 6 and 8 months. It is important the second surgery does not occur too early or too late. Please ask during your first post-operative appointment for the reasons 6–8 month time between the first and second procedure.

During the second procedure:

  • The plastic will be removed.
  • Your ear will be inspected to ensure there is no remaining cholesteatoma. If any is found, it is removed.
  • Your ear bones will be reconstructed with an artificial bone of hearing made from titanium.

Please discuss the specifics of the second stage procedure during your next follow-up appointment.
